Comedy

+++++++++++++++++++++++

CANCELLED: Axbridge Roxy Comedy was set to return on Thursday, June 4th, 2020, but due to the Covid-19 crisis it had to be abandoned. However once the restrictions are lifted for comedy and theatre etc, a new date will be planned.

On June 4th, the Axbridge Comedy Nights were to restart with Joe Williams as the host and featuring Eva Bindeman, Richard James, Julia Stenton, and Harry Mottram.

Hopefully the same line up will happen when the pandemic crisis disappears enough to allow events like this.

This was the line up:

Oversharing oddball Julia Stenton talks property, puberty and power. Unexpected, witty and engaging Julia’s vivid imagery and acerbic storytelling will take you there. Funny women semi finalist 2019 and Stand Up for Cider finalist 2020 and host of comedy @ the crafty egg

Eva Bindeman is a fresh face on the South West comedy scene bringing a warm, conversational humour to her stand up with a twist of the unexpected. Funny Women 2019 Semi finalist, SYTYF 2019 Semi finalist, and founder of Comedy @ the crafty egg, eva is a comic to look out for in 2020 and beyond.

Richard James from Devon is a member of The Comedy Avengers. ‘Quick wit and hilarious anecdotes more. In an interview with the School of Laughter he said: “Two jokes that I’ve always loved. One is by Robin Williams, ‘Two Cannibals eating a clown, one turns to the other and says ‘Does this taste funny to you?’ And for me the other is one by Matt Lucas as George Dawes when he said ‘I don’t believe in any of that star sign nonsense, but that’s me, typical Pisces.’ “

Harry Mottram is set to preview his one man show Dodgy Keeper – that acclaimed play has toured in previous years to Edinburgh, Bristol, Bath and was sold out in Axbridge. It follows the comic story of yes you’ve guessed in a dodgy goal keeper.

Joe Williams will be your compere – his breakthrough gig was at the last Axbridge comedy night when he proved a confident and witty stand-up – and welcomes you to a night of laughter in which self-isolation jokes may or may not be banned. Now, please wash your hands.

COMEDY – REVIEW – Pillars of Society Roadshow in Axbridge is ‘thought provoking and slightly chaotic’

Review Pillars of Society at The Axbridge Roxy. November 1, 2018

Replace the House of Commons with the House of Comics, and replace the establishment with a new Utopia based on kindness. Two of the lines that come from a trio of stand-ups who presented their manifesto of mirth at a reasonably packed Axbridge Roxy with their comedy roadshow The Pillars of Society.

Introduced by Christian Russell-Pollock suitably dressed in hi-vis jacket and safety helmet in a set composed of cardboard pillars and safety tape he explained that predictions of how we’d look in the future were wrong. Nobody would wear space style clothing, instead the best representatives of obese Britain were the Teletubbies.

Jon Matthews presented a more radical set of thoughts expressing his hatred of i-phones – or rather the smugness of their owners while Eliza Fraser pointed out that The Fat Controller in Thomas the Tank Engine was a classic pillar of the establishment with his top hat, tail coat and managing director role of the trains.

The show culminated with a survey and the building of a new set of cardboard pillars with some of the new found principles of the new Utopia. Entertaining, thought provoking and slightly chaotic but always engaged with the audience The Pillars of Society is a comic sideways look at society.
