By Harry Mottram: below are the fixtures and results plus information of the various sports teams and clubs – I try to keep them up to date but do send in your results and news to harryfmottram@gmail.com

Latest Sports News

American Football: Bath Killer Bees: Home games at Bath University on Eastwood Rugby 1. The address is University of Bath Sports Training Village, Norwood Avenue, Claverton Down, Bath,  BA2 7AY.  There are games this Sunday 4th Feb against Bournemouth with a 1 pm KO, and Wednesday 14th Feb against Exeter with a 12:30pm KO. Anyone is welcome to watch.

Football: Bath City Women FC: This report is from the Club: Bath City Women remain unbeaten in 2024 but had to settle for a point against Stockwood Wanderers this afternoon. Goals from Abby Gray and Emily Dellow had given them a 2-0 lead before Toni Blenkinsopp pulled a goal back in first half stoppage time. And the home side completed the comeback thanks to a second half penalty from Lauren Phillips. The Development side remained just two points behind league leaders Weston Super Mare Women Reserves thanks to a 4-2 victory over Portishead Ladies A Team. Jasmine Rennie (2), Liv Davis and Amy Hucker were on target in the win in North Bristol.

Football: Bath City FC: An away win at Weston-super-Mare by one goal to nil lifts Bath into eighth in the Vanarama National League South just one point off the play-offs behind Torquay. However Bath has games in hand over the Devonshire and one time Football League team so a late season push for promotion is still on. Cody Cooke grounded the Seagulls with his 50th goal in the 50th minute as he beat Max Harris in goal for the seasiders. Weston -super-Mare pressed throughout the game with Bath’s Josey Casa-Grande kept busy in City’s goal but the Romans also came close with when Dan Hayfield headed close and Scott Wilson saw his second half shot rise above the crossbar. The Seagulls will feel they should have had at least a draw but City held out at 0-1 to take home all three points as they march on with their promotion hopes intact.

Rugby: Bath Rugby Union Club: It’s never easy to accept a defeat to the Bristol Bears (formerly Bristol Football Club late of the Memorial Ground) 12 miles up the River Avon at Ashton Gate but this one will leave a bitter taste as at one time in the second half Bath looked about to turn the game on its head – but it was not to be. Bath’s internationals were absent for the call ups to the Six Nations and it’s fair to say their replacements didn’t gel until the second half despite a blistering start when Finn Russell put in a cross-field kick for Joe Cokanasig to touch down. But Bristol scored five tries by the interval with the score at 33-15 so it needed a BB&W’s comeback to make the second half a closer encounter.

Finn Russell

In a thrilling second half in which Bath scored tries through Tom de Glanville, Jaco Coetzee and Thomas du Toit, with Finn Russell proving lethal with the boot, it was a late try from Rich Lane for Bristol that finally ensured the home side came out on top. On BBC Radio Bristol Gareth Chilcott described Finn Russell as making blunders, and Bath as playing like ‘schoolboys’ in the first half. These comments may not endear the former Bath player to fans of the BB&Ws as the game was closer than the score suggests – and Bath will have come away thinking they could have won, had one or two decisions gone their way.

Both Jaco Coetzee and Louis Schreuder were yellow carded allowing Bristol an advantage and of course with the likes of Beno Obano, Will Stuart and Ollie Lawrence amongst others on international duty this was always going to be a challenge – but with 44 points notched up against Bristol at least it shows the game has some positives for Bath and they remain in third spot in the league with Bristol lower down in eighth spot.

Rugby: Bath Rugby Union Club Men

Details at https://www.bathrugby.com/

The Blue, Black and Whites are in the Champions Cup pool stages in 2023/24. Taking place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the home of next year’s final, Sarra Elgan and Vincent Pochulu announced Bath Rugby’s fate for their European campaign. Being drawn in Pool 2, Bath Rugby will take on two French teams in the form of Top14 Champions, Stade Toulousain, along with Racing 92 and the URC’s Cardiff Rugby and Ulster Rugby. Bath Rugby have also drawn Harlequins, however under the Champions Cup’s new format, teams within the same league drawn into the same pool will not play each other.

Within the new format, the Champions Cup sees four pools of six teams, totalling 24 teams. The teams are split into two tiers; the four winning teams from the 2022/23 leagues (Munster, La Rochelle, Stade Toulousain and Saracens) make up Tier 1, with the remaining 20 qualifying teams placed into Tier 2. In a club first, the Blue, Black and White will take on Racing 92 who finished fifth in the Top14, giving new signing Finn Russell the chance to front up against his former French side.

Recent Top14 winners, Stade Toulousain, may also get the chance to visit The Rec, giving Bath a shot at redemption after a narrow 20-22 defeat the last time the French champions were in town in 2018.

Cardiff Rugby, who picked up the Welsh Shield for 2022/23, were handed a 38-3 hammering in 2016 and will look for retaliation come the pool stages.

Northern Ireland-based outfit Ulster Rugby, who were knocked out in this year’s URC 2022/23 quarter finals, complete Bath Rugby’s Pool fixtures for 2023/24.

Round of 16 – 5/6/7 April 2024
Quarter-finals – 12/13/14 April 2024
Semi-finals – 3/4/5 May 2024

Final – Saturday 25 May 2024, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
