By Harry Mottram: It was dubbed the Wagatha Christie Trial-a bust up which gripped the gossip columns of popular newspapers and news websites for weeks in 2022. The legal dispute between Rebekah Vardy – wife of Leicester City’s striker Jamie Vardy – and Coleen Rooney – wife of the footballer Wayne Rooney – took on soap opera proportions as the revelations of the lifestyles of the so-called WAGS were put under the public spotlight.

The seeds of the  £3million pound case were sewn in 2019 when Coleen suspected aspects of her private life were being leaked to the press by Rebekah. She set a trap and changed her Instagram settings so they could only be viewed by Rebekah and noticed the story appeared soon afterwards in The Sun. Coleen then had the evidence and wrote on Twitter it was Rebekah who was behind the stories – and the media dubbed it Wagatha Christie in reference to the detective Agatha Christie. Angered at this accusation Rebekah unwisely sued for libel and the rest is history.

Now the play of the trial adapted from the original high court transcripts by Liv Hennessy and turned into a play Vardy v Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial, first staged in 2022 at The Wyndham Theatre, is set to be produced in Axbridge understands Axbridge Review. Directed by Phil Saunders of Axbridge Community Theatre, it will run at the Town Hall from November 26-29, 2025. The drama won a  Noel Coward Olivier Award and has been staged a number of times by different theatre groups.

It is anticipated like all ACT productions tickets will sell out – details will follow later this summer. More information at https://www.facebook.com/AxbridgeACT/?locale=en_GB
