The agony of the last four days is over with Joe Biden declared the winner of the USA presidential election. A historic moment as Kamala Harris becomes the first female VP and it’s a 21st century moment with the defeat of a populist politician who created so much division. I might be able to sleep in the early hours instead of tuning into ABC News, CNN Live and NBC etc to get the latest updates! As someone said Trump has to put on his big boy pants and admit defeat.

For those who follow such things, the last four years has been very concerning as Trump’s engagement with dictators and his dismissal of former allies in the democratic western world showed a disregard for all the values we share. Such as democracy, civil liberties and human rights.

Now he is to depart the most powerful job in the world and thankfully there will be grown-ups in charge – they may be dull – they may not be charismatic – but they will be Tweeting less.

Notes from the BBC:

Joe Biden has been elected president of the United States, after his projected victory in Pennsylvania took him over the winning line.

President-elect Biden now has 279 electoral college votes, taking him past the 270 needed to win. Donald Trump has 214.

Mr Biden will become the 46th president in January, pending the outcome of any legal challenges.

Mr Biden’s running mate, Kamala Harris, will make history as the first woman vice-president, as well as the first black and the first Asian American vice-president.
