By Harry Mottram: The evening runs from 7-9pm on Wednesday, 23rd July 2025, with a 20 minute interval for teas and coffees. We are asking for a donation to help pay for the newly opened arts centre for its running and upkeep. The donation is suggested at £2 – but pay what you can afford – every penny counts – but please bring cash. The building is the the former Axbridge Methodist Chapel/Church which became redundant last year – so as an arts centre it has been given a new life.
The evening is hosted by Associate Professor of Victorian Poetry Simon Rennie of Exeter University – who lives in Axbridge. Simon has run similar events for years and encourages those interested to come along and read your poetry – or poetry you admire – or simply sit and listen to others reading in a beautiful space with fine acoustics and with an appreciative and supportive audience.

The building has a one year lease at present and it is stipulated no alcohol should be consumed as part of the agreement – so we will serve tea and coffees at the interval of about 20 minutes – afterwards you are welcome to join some of us at the pub for a drink. The event is run by the group Axe Vale Arts who have taken on the project through the work of Paul Hughes and Peter Harding who live nearby.
The evening will be hosted and led by Simon Rennie – you can read about Simon at https://experts.exeter.ac.uk/24816-simon-rennie
There is parking in the town’s free carparks with limited street parking in the town centre. For more details call Simon on 07411 901148 or email: harryfmottram@gmail.com More at https://www.facebook.com/groups/583188354145782/
