Axe Vale Arts Centre News

Credit to Paul Hughes and Pete Harding who live in the town who have managed to secure the former Methodist Church as an arts centre for 12 months. Whether it can remain as an arts centre is up to residents to help support it with events and general help in maintaining the 1850 Victorian place of worship – now declared redundant by the church authorities. On Sunday 6th July there will be a launch day for locals to declare their interest and volunteer their services – including musicians, actors, poets and artists. On Saturday 14th June, during Rumble in the Jumble there will be a stall outside the building in West Street – all contributions welcome for the stall – to raise cash for the project.

Rumble in the Jumble

Spread out across the streets of the town Rumble in the Jumble is a charity fundraiser – this year the proceeds go to the museum at King John’s Hunting Lodge. Residents can still bag a table for £10 by contacting Barbara Wells. She writes: Name address and money for stall to 49 West St or into the Museum by Friday 4pm to get on the map.

Carnival Café

The carnival committee members and helpers of the town’s Axbridge Blackberry September Carnival are running a café in the town hall on Saturday 14th June, to coincide with Rumble in the Jumble. They will be selling teas, coffee and cakes for cash – not card. The next carnival is on Saturday 20th September, 2025. Bristol Airport parking

Criminals who operate unlicensed and unofficial car parking at or near Bristol Airport have left holidaymakers with damaged cars and in some cases parked miles away in villages and laybys. Airport police team, the Immigration Enforcement Team, North Somerset Council and the Motor Insurance Bureauhave been carrying out an operation to clamp down on vehicles which are supposed to be securely parked but are used for journeys often by uninsured drivers with unexplained mileage. Some vehicles had been involved in parking and driving offences and, in some cases, while some were left so badly damaged, they were undriveable or in an unroadworthy condition or were left abandoned and in contravention to parking restrictions.

North Somerset Council said there was an increasing number of holidaymakers who use Bristol Airport being misled by rogue parking companies and instead they should only use operators who are part ofthe British Parking Association’s police-backed Park Mark Safer Parking scheme.

Textile Hanging

The textile artwork depicting Axbridge’s Heritage Trail has gone on permanent public display in St John the Baptist Church in the town. You can see the wall hanging in its protective frame on the left as you enter the church – in an area dubbed the community hub.

WAGS

The play Vardy v Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial, first staged in 2022 at The Wyndham Theatre, is set to be produced in Axbridge. Directed by Phil Saunders of Axbridge Community Theatre, it will run at the Town Hall from November 26-29, 2025. The drama won a Noel Coward Olivier Award and has been staged a number of times by different theatre groups. WAGS stands for Wives and Girl Friends – mainly attributed to the partners of famous footballers.
