ACT double bill of drama
With two one-act plays ACT is this autumn celebrating the work of two towering figures from 20th century playwriting – Samuel Beckett and one of his most original disciples, Harold Pinter.
One of his earlier plays, The Dumb Waiter is Pinter at his very, very best. Anyone who thinks his work dour or forbidding is in for a shock. The Dumb Waiter has been described as a “comedy of menace” and is extremely funny from start to finish. If you want to trace the dramatic origins of films like Reservoir Dogs on In Bruges, here they are.
Footfalls, by contrast, is a masterpiece of theatrical minimalism. It combines voice, movement and visual impact to shattering effect. One of Beckett’s later works, it is also one of his most accessible. Originally written in English (not Beckett’s often-favoured French) it tells the life stories of its female Irish characters with the utmost economy
These are ACT’s first one-act plays since we performed Tom Stoppard’s A Separate Peace and The Real Inspector Hound in 2013. We hope you will enjoy them. Rarely performed by non-professional companies, we are proud to be entrusted with them. Please join us in this celebration of two 20th century giants.
